Genevieve Lysen’s Experience

Last night in Haiti reflection...

Although I feel that I could not possibly express how I feel in words I must try...

Because of this trip, I know my life will never be the same.   I expected something of the sort but certainly not to the extent to which my existence and the meaning behind it has been altered.   Each day here in Haiti my eyes have opened wider to the reality of inequity and injustice in our world.   I also have come to a better understanding of what poverty really means and it implications.

My experiences in Haiti will change the course of my life and my career path.  I know that the Haitian people will forever be in my heart and mind.  I feel as though I MUST do something more for the desperate, destitute and dying in this country.  I know that it won't be easy but now I must figure out how.

The people of fond-des-blancs, their patience, their hope, and their honesty gives me back the faith that I had lost in humanity.  While at the same time the state of this country is testament to the greed, corruption, abuse, discrimination and ignorance of man.  The country itself is a juxtaposition to its inhabitants.  Haiti is a country in economic and social ruins where the people are the most dedicated, bright and hardworking as anywhere.

I want to extend my thanks to Nannette for her compassion, honesty and her faith in me and in the group.  She really is a special individual and I could never thank her enough for what she has done for the Haitian people.  As the sister said today, Haiti needs you Nanette and others like you.

A thought...Haiti, like the Haitian people, suffers from malnourishment.
