Dear Nannette, I just wanted to tell you a brief summary of our wonderful trip to St. Boniface (March 2-7). Our team which consisted of an OT, PT, two computer whizzes, 2 nurses (not including Sandy) and a nurse practitioner accomplished so much in such a short amount of time. Our OT/PT team was phenomenal. They went to work right away doing their magic with the paraplegics and spinal cord injured patients from the USS Comfort. We saw people walking for the first time, getting into wheelchairs, sitting up and communicating and they left a wealth of information behind with detailed … Read more»

We have received a few patients from the Comfort who have head injuries. As a result of this they aren't able to eat on their own, so they had PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tubes placed. These tubes are placed through the abdominal wall directly into the stomach for patients who will need long-term tube feedings. This is where my clinical experience as a dietitian has been coming in handy. We have limited access to the formulas … Read more» [2 comments]

Dr. Critides has operated on several of the patients that we have received from the Comfort. They arrived with some supplies for us and rounded on the patients with our medical director, Dr. Pierre. The patients remembered the wonderful care that Dr. Critides had given them and they were happy … Read more» [0 comments]

There are hundreds of groups, large and small, doing relief work in Haiti right now. Much time has been spent networking and finding sources of supplies and medicine for L'Hopital St. Boniface. This past week has been particularly fruitful. We've received both essential medicines and needed supplies from WHO/PROMESS, Americares, Direct Relief International, and the USNS Comfort. The hospital is full, and with the patients we've been receiving from the Comfort, our needs are … Read more» [0 comments]

Our group of patients from the USNS Comfort has been steadily increasing and we are happy to find out that it is possible for some to make a full recovery after bed rest and physical therapy. The Navy Helicopters have become the prime attraction in town; even after the 7th trip, the community is just as curious. The pilots have also become more adept at locating the small landing field. Yesterday (Thursday), we received four patients, … Read more» [1 comments]
