N’ap degaje - we’re making do

By Ellen on February 28 2010, 9:09am

We have received a few patients from the Comfort who have head injuries. As a result of this they aren't able to eat on their own, so they had PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tubes placed. These tubes are placed through the abdominal wall directly into the stomach for patients who will need long-term tube feedings. This is where my clinical experience as a dietitian has been coming in handy. We have limited access to the formulas that we need to put through the tubes to feed the patient. In the US and Canada, they are very expensive, and in Haiti they …

Snapshot of the day

By Ellen on February 23 2010, 10:57am

Just thought I'd give a snapshot of how our days are here.  Here's a list of what's going on while I'm sitting at my computer at 11:00 am: - malnutrition prevention program is underway, which means there are about 100 women waiting by the depot to receive rations for their children.  This is a PREVENTION program for families with children under 2 years of age.  Once a month they receive some extra food. - Healing Hands …

Medical visit from US Navy

By Ellen on February 20 2010, 3:01pm

Saturday we had visitors from the USNS Comfort.  Commander Sam Critides, a neurosurgeon, came with a physical therapist, photographer and two soldiers for security.  Dr. Critides has operated on several of the patients that we have received from the Comfort. They arrived with some supplies for us and rounded on the patients with our medical director, Dr. Pierre.  The patients remembered the wonderful care that Dr. Critides had given them and they were happy …

Essential Supplies

By Ellen on February 14 2010, 12:01pm

There are hundreds of groups, large and small, doing relief work in Haiti right now. Much time has been spent networking and finding sources of supplies and medicine for L'Hopital St. Boniface. This past week has been particularly fruitful. We've received both essential medicines and needed supplies from WHO/PROMESS, Americares, Direct Relief International, and the USNS Comfort. The hospital is full, and with the patients we've been receiving from the Comfort, our needs are …

13 patients and counting

By Ellen on February 14 2010, 12:00pm

Our group of patients from the USNS Comfort has been steadily increasing and we are happy to find out that it is possible for some to make a full recovery after bed rest and physical therapy. The Navy Helicopters have become the prime attraction in town; even after the 7th trip, the community is just as curious. The pilots have also become more adept at locating the small landing field. Yesterday (Thursday), we received four patients, …

Training the 82nd Airborne

By Ellen on February 06 2010, 4:37pm

Conor has been networking with many organizations in Port au Prince, and has developed a contact with Capt. Coulter of the 82nd Airborne.  Capt. Coulter and his men have been checking on the camps and orphanages, assessing needs and putting people in contact with others who can help them out with supplies and support.  We went with him last week to visit the Missionaries of Charity Home for Children (Mother Teresa's) to see some of the …
