Conor has been networking with many organizations in Port au Prince, and has developed a contact with Capt. Coulter of the 82nd Airborne. Capt. Coulter and his men have been checking on the camps and orphanages, assessing needs and putting people in contact with others who can help them out with supplies and support. We went with him last week to visit the Missionaries of Charity Home for Children (Mother Teresa's) to see some of the children. Due to extreme structural damage at Mother Teresa's home for children in Port-Au-Prince, the sisters have asked us to accept any severely malnourished children who are brought to them for help. We will making a weekly stop at the home to pick up any children needing treatment and will bring them back to the sisters for follow-up care. As patients come in from the USNS Comfort, it is becoming apparent that our hospital in Fond des Blancs is the only institution willing to accept quadriplegic or paraplegic patients from the ship. While we do not specialize in these types of cases, we are banking on partnerships and our donors to help us with their continuing care. A memorial mass was held this morning at Egliz San Franswa in Fond des Blancs. It was organized by our employees at the hospital to commemorate the victims of the earthquake. Many of our staff have lost family and loved ones and this mass is a way for them to remember, grieve and move on. After a week of listening for helicopter sounds, we were glad the noise we heard yesterday morning turned out to not be a motorcycle but a navy helicopter carrying a special envoy from the USNS Comfort. Captain Stockinger, our contact on the ship, accompanied by seven other people, including a navy pediatrician, three armed guards and a volunteer journalist toured our hospital and the town in search of a field large enough to accommodate a huge …

We left early Monday morning for Port au Prince and returned late. We had a busy, fruitful day. First stop was a National Nutrition Cluster meeting at the Unicef tent at the UN compound near the airport. This cluster meeting is normally a monthly event which we have participated in, but now it is happening once or twice a week. It allows the NGOs that are doing nutrition work to meet as a group and strategize. …
