Activity Update

By Ellen on March 14 2010, 8:29am

Despite how quiet this blog has been, the level of activity here has not abated. Our team has been working long days and weeks covering current needs, like our regular programs, and planning future programs to deal with the long-term effects of the earthquake in our region.

On Friday and Saturday, Conor, Dr. Miliane and I made a grueling roadtrip to Jacmel and Port au Prince to meet with several organizations.  We met with ACDI/VOCA, Unicef, the World Food Program, CRS, the Ministry of Health, and attended the health cluster meeting.  We're being asked by the Ministry of Health to increase our area of coverage near Villa to places that do not have any services.  We are planning on implementing a large-scale emergency nutrition and health program to address the increased needs of the area post-disaster.

We know the needs are great.  We are receiving more and more people asking for help - jobs, food, homes and home repair.

The hospital is full and we have been developing contacts that will provide a steady stream of referals here for care.  Doctors who have visited here since the disaster tell us that we are one of the best sites they've seen.  Our surgical suite and staff are getting rave reviews, and because of our newly acquired digital x-ray, we know patients will be coming. We are getting some excellent support with our communications system and will see some changes and improvements to our access to internet and telephone.

The level of excitement and committment from all our staff about what we are doing remains high.  We know we are in a good position to provide help and quality care to the people we are committed to serving.
