By Rita on January 25 2010, 3:11pm

People who give to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim the donations on their 2009 tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service said Monday.

Taxpayers who itemize deductios on their 2009 return qualify for a special tax relief provision enacted Friday, the agency said.  Only cash contributions made to charities made to charities after January 11 and before March 1 are eligible.  That includes contributions made by text message, check, and credit card or debit card.

"Americans have opened thier hearts to help those affected by the Haiti earthquake," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said.  "This new law provides an immediate tax benefit for the many taxpayers who have made generous donations."
