Many of our visitors who come on immersion trips get the chance to visit Lakay Granmoun, AKA Queen of Peace Home. It's a home for 10 elderly people in our community who do not have family, or their family is unable to care for them. It is funded through the generous support of Queen of Peace parish in Gainesville, Florida. The residents receive three meals a day, round-the-clock help, a comfortable, clean room, and the companionship of others. The are seen once a month by Dr. Blaise, our internal medicine physician and have a weekly visit from our nurses. When they are ill they are taken to the hospital for care.
One of my projects was to examine the menu to make some changes to make it more healthy. This turned into looking at how food was being purchased and how we could better work within the budget. Food prices have risen considerably here so this has impacted the purchasing power. As I got more into the budget etc., I was asked if I'd like to take over the responsibility, so now Lakay Granmoun is under new management - me!
I've met with the employees, reworded the job descriptions and posted them. I've been working with the purchasing for about month, and am beginning to get an idea of what will fit in the budget and what will not. I've got spreadsheets and forms galore. I'm implementing better controls and working closely with the woman who is the supervisor. The new menu is starting this week. It is my hope that this will work consistently within the budget. My next hope is that we can fit in some of the extras for the residents.
Those who have visited Lakay Granmoun know how wonderful these people are. As my Kreyol has gotten better I've started to interact with them more. The are sometimes very lively and usually very funny. It is a joy to spend time with them.

Several of the residents had cataract surgery when the Eye Team visited last summer. What a delight it was that they could see again the morning after surgery!
