National Children’s Health Week & Dyphtheria Vaccinations

By Ellen on November 25 2009, 3:25pm

The Haitian state has declared this week as National Children's Health Week.  The children in our programs are receiving supplementation of Vitamin A, Iodine, Zinc and albendazole, a deworming medication.

The week has coincided with recent efforts to immunize children for dyphtheria.  There has been a recent outbreak of the disease in Haiti, and we've had a few cases in our region.  Dyphtheria is a highly contagious respiratory infection that has been practically eliminated in developed nations.

The photo shows children who came to the hospital's nutrition center to be immunized by our community health staff.  They are students of Ekol Sen Franswa who came after their classes were finished today.  They patiently waited to be admitted to have their vaccine.  Surprisingly, they were excited to get a shot.
