The new road to Kapen

By Ellen on March 24 2009, 3:11pm

The Food for Work road program is winding down.  All of the people visiting us in recent months have been remarking how much better the drive is into Fond des Blancs from the Route Nationale.  Travel time has been reduced considerably and the ride is much more comfortable because of the improvement of the road.

As part of the road improvement program, a new road to the hilltop village of Kapen (Capin) has been built.  For the past few years, Kapen has been inaccessible by truck because there was a very large washout at the bottom of the mountain.  Anyone who wanted to go to the top had to walk or go by mule. Likewise, leaving Kapen to go to market or visit the hospital was difficult for the people living there.

The new road approaches the village from a different direction, one that is much less steep and easier to drive. Families there will benefit economically as they will now be able to carry their goods to be sold at market. Already, land prices there have risen because of this improvement.  The new road also means our large truck now has access to the village and construction of the new school is starting.

Sometimes this is the way it is in Haiti - you make one improvement and watch how this multiplies itself and improves the lives of many people.

Other photos from Kapen can be found here.

It is wonderful to see the latest improvement in Fond des Blancs.  I am always amazed at the progress being made.  This school will be a huge step forward for the community and the new road is awesome!
