A wide range of community health initiatives are offered through the St. Boniface Hospital. These initiatives focus on getting out of the hospital into the surrounding area to reach those in need who cannot make it to the hospital or who may not be aware of what programs are available. For some programs, the people may be better served by receiving care in their local villages instead of traveling to the hospital. Community Health programs include:
Immunization programs for children. Nurses travel to outlying villages on a regular basis to make sure all children are properly immunized.
Health Education programs. Doctors, nurses, and dentists give classes on physiology, human development and disease prevention, teaching people how to live healthier lives.
Water and sanitation initiatives. SBHF is increasing access to clean water by building deep water wells and teaching good sanitation practices to prevent water borne illnesses, a leading cause of death in young children.
HIV/AIDS education, testing, counseling, and support groups
A key strategy to the success of our community health programs involves the participation and leadership of local community members.
These programs allow St. Boniface to deliver healthcare to outlying and isolated sections within our catchment area. Mountainous terrain and a lack of health facilities in the area make community health an essential component of the Foundation’s healthcare model. People in need of additional care are referred to St. Boniface Hospital for further treatment.
