The elderly in Haiti are often left aside when talking about issues of healthcare and social services. St. Boniface recognizes that this group is truly vulnerable to the dire poverty that is pervasive in rural Haiti. Families are stretched to the limit in these regions and many times the elderly are without the support necessary to help them in their later years.
The St. Boniface Haiti Foundation offers support to some of the most vulnerable citizens in the region through the Our Lady Queen of Peace Elderly Home sponsored by Queen of Peace Parish in Gainesville, FL. This home offers hospice care to elderly citizens who are unable to care for themselves. Everyone who is employed at the home is from the local village, which adds to the sense of community in the facility.
All the residents at the Home have semi-private rooms and receive three meals a day. There is a large porch which faces the main road and there is a water well in front so the residents are able to remain a part of the community as they can talk to everyone as they come to get their daily water. There is a long waiting list for people to move into the Home. It is our hopes that we will be able to expand the Our Lady Queen of Peace Elderly Home in the not to distant future.
