Hospital

The St. Boniface Hospital in rural Fond des Blancs, was built in 1992, replacing a 2-room clinic manned by a single nurse. In 2008, the hospital expects to treat more than 50,000 patients! As a result of the increasing demand, the hospital is in a current expansion phase, doubling the in-patient capacity from 30 to 60 beds and increasing from 100 to 150 employees. The hospital is the center of healthcare for the outlying regions throughout the catchment area.

Many patients are forced to travel great distances for medical care on foot, by donkey, or carried by their neighbors. An ambulance service has begun to pick up those most in need of assistance, many of whom receive care at our emergency room which is open 24 hours a day.

U.S. Surgical Teams from Jacksonville, Florida, travel to our hospital 6-8 time per year performing hundreds of surgeries on Haitians who otherwise would have no treatment available to them. These people now have hope for a normal life, relieved of their pain and suffering.

The hospital has grown tremendously during the past few years and is one of only a few major health centers in the south of Haiti. The hospital is accredited by Haiti’s Ministry of Health and works in partnership with the Haitian state and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
