The St. Boniface Haiti Foundation’s goat project has been one of the most successful programs in its history. Goats are a vital source of food for the poor as well as an important souce of income. This project was initially suggested by the local peasant cooperative and working together it has become a model for future programs.
Donors in the US purchased individual goats that were given to poor families in the Fond des Blancs area. The local goats were crossed with a larger breed from the Dominican Republic to increase the size of the goats. Once a family had two goat litters they gave two goats to another poor family. As a result, more families have been able to raise goats and the animals have commanded larger prices at the local market. This past year, the national television station in Haiti made a documentary to share the positive lessons of the project. Fond des Blancs is now the Goat Capital of Haiti!
St. Boniface is now working with Food for the Poor and the local peasant cooperative to implement a chicken project that will introduce rapid egg-laying chickens to the community.
