Maternal and Child Health

Maternal and child mortality rates in Haiti are the worst in the western hemisphere. The people in rural areas like Fond des Blancs are especially vulnerable. The St. Boniface Haiti Foundation is working hard to improve maternal and child health.

Our efforts include providing prenatal care, education programs, and nutritious food to pregnant women; having an OB/GYN, nurse midwife, and pediatrician on staff; offering free care for all women who deliver at the hospital; paying local traditional birth attendants a referral fee for women with high risk pregnancies so we can proactively treat them; providing 24-hour ambulance service to women in labor; and having the ability to perform emergency Cesarean Sections whenever necessary.

The St. Boniface Hospital consistently implements innovative and effective solutions to maternal and child health issues with input from the local community and staff. Some of this is made possible through partnerships with Catholic Relief Services, UNICEF, the Haitian Ministry of Health, and other organizations.
