Many children who come to our hospital and outreach programs are severely malnourished. The most severe cases are hospitalized. All are enrolled in our outpatient Nutrition Program. We give nutritious food to the mothers for the entire family. Mothers bring their children every other week to be weighed and measured to track their progress. They also attend education classes to teach them how to provide the best possible nutrition for their children.
The hospital also provides nutritional support to pregnant women, tuberculosis patients, and HIV+ patients, through our partnership with Catholic Relief Services.
Additionally we have a Secondary School Feeding Program at the local Catholic School. All children in primary school in Haiti receive lunch at school, which for many is their only meal of the day. The students in secondary school do not receive lunch and often cannot concentrate in the afternoon as they do not eat until they return home in the evening, if they eat at all. Through the generosity of a private donor we now offer lunch at one of the secondary schools in Fond des Blancs. The hope is that we will be able to expand the program to other schools in the area.
