Bequests and Revocable Trusts
Support the Future of the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation
When you write your Will or Revocable Trust, you acknowledge the people and institutions that mean the most to you. A gift to the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation shows your confidence that we will continue to make a difference in the lives of the poor far into the future. Donors can leave a lasting legacy of hope for the poor in their final giving that they are often unable to do during their lifetimes.
A bequest or distribution from a revocable trust is easy to arrange (see samples below). It is not payable until death, so it does not affect the donor's assets or cash flow during lifetime. It is private - a will need not be filed or made public until death. And, it is revocable - individuals can change the provisions in their wills or revocable trusts at any time until death.
A bequest can deliver a specific dollar amount or asset (a specific bequest), or a percentage of the balance remaining in the donor's estate after taxes, expenses and specific bequests have been paid (a residual bequest). Generally, giving a percent of the residue allows for more flexibility in long term planning.
A charitable bequest or trust distribution reduces the taxable value of an estate for federal estate purposes, and is exempt from state inheritance taxes.
You Can Make Your Bequest in Several Ways...
Specific Bequest:
"I bequeath to the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, a Massachusetts non-profit corporation located in Randolph, MA, Twenty Thousand ($20,000) Dollars [or: all the Home Depot stock which I own at the time of my death."
Residual Bequest:
"All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate I bequeath to the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation, a Massachusetts non-profit corporation located in Randolph, MA."
...And We Can Use Your Bequest in Two Ways:
Your bequest can be directed to support a specific program, or you can tell the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation to apply it to the need that is most pressing at the time your bequest is received. Since we will not likely receive your bequest until far into the future, we prefer that its terms be as general as possible. Please consult with us if you are considering a bequest for a specific purpose.
