Prisoners in Haiti live in severely inhumane conditions that no human being should have to endure. There is no legal system as we know it and once imprisoned people can get lost and have little hope of release. Fathers can be thrown into prison for “crimes” such as stealing bread to feed their children who are starving.
The St. Boniface Hospital works in the Aquin prison to provide basic services to prisoners held at the facility. Through a partnership with local authorities, the hospital sponsors health education classes, especially pertaining to HIV/AIDS, as well as material support through donations of hygiene items, clothing, and food. The prisoners are very appreciative of anything we do to help them and our visits are important to their survival and well-being.
Providing services to the prisoners in Haiti is central to the St. Boniface Haiti Foundation’s mission of serving the poorest of the poor. Food for the Poor, donates food and hygiene products to the project. Local community groups, including the “Messengers of Love,” partner with us to visit the prisoners in the facility and help us distribute the donations.
