The St. Boniface Hospital is currently in the process of expanding and opening Satellite Clinics in outlying areas to bring medical care to more people. The people in the areas surrounding the clinics are without access to basic primary healthcare. The St. Boniface Hospital is the closest healthcare facility and can be a 10-16 hour walk which is often only undertaken for the most critical cases. Leaders in these outlying areas have asked the St. Boniface Hospital to open a clinic in their communities to provide better access to healthcare for the people.
The Satellite Clinics will be staffed with a doctor and two nurses. Additional specialized healthcare workers may also visit on a regular basis. The clinics will provide the first level of healthcare including prenatal care, well-baby care, treatment of injuries, and testing for diseases. The more severe cases will be referred to the St. Boniface Hospital for further treatment. The clinics will also serve as community health outreach centers where people can go for education and disease prevention programs as well as for nutritional support for malnourished children.
The Satellite Clinics will complement the St. Boniface Hospital providing a full-range of healthcare services to the poor in the most rural areas.
In 2008 the first Satellite Clinic will open in partnership with the Mennonite Community in Villa, a 12-hour walk from the hospital. In 2009 we hope to partner with UNICEF, WHO, and the Haitian Ministry of Health to open a clinic in Moulliage Fouquet. Three additional clinics are planned for the surrounding areas as funding allows.
