Most children in Haiti never have the opportunity to go to secondary school. This is due to a shortage of schools and teachers, especially in rural areas like Fond des Blancs. Those who can afford it, send their children to live with relatives in Port-au-Prince.
The St. Boniface Haiti Foundation supports the St. Francis Xavier secondary school in Fond des Blancs. This year we are funding the addition of a 12th grade so that more students can complete secondary school and receive their schooling locally.
We have a Secondary School Feeding Program at St. Francis Xavier School which gives lunch to all the secondary school students. Normally the school lunch programs are only for primary students. However, we have found that most secondary students do not eat before or during the school day and lose focus and energy in the afternoon. Providing lunch for the students enables them to receive a nutritious meal and helps them to learn more during their classes. As with the younger children, this is often the only meal of the day for these students. We hope to expand this program to other secondary schools in the area.
Deerwood Scholars:
St. Boniface Haiti Foundation gives scholarships to fifteen of the most talented students to attend secondary schools in the city. It is hoped that these students will go on to University and become the future leaders of Fond des Blancs. These scholarships are funded by the Deerwood, Florida Rotary Club.
