HEI/SBH Surgical Center Opens Its Doors!

On Thanksgiving morning in the US, our team in Haiti celebrated a huge milestone after performing the first surgery in the new HEI/SBH Surgical Center.

Dr. Berthony Guerrier, head of Obstectrics and Gynecology, was assisted by Dr. Luther Ward and the entire surgical team on the successful hysterectomy for a local woman.

You can see from the smiles on the surgical team’s faces how happy they are to be working in this fantastic new building. They even sang in celebration when they arrived that morning.

The new Surgical Center was constructed with support from USAID’s American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program. With the generous support of the American people through USAID/ASHA, HEI/SBH is working hand in hand with the people of southern Haiti to improve the state of healthcare in the region.

Huge thanks to our partners at Build Health International for making the new center a reality, and finishing it on time despite the setback of Hurricane Matthew. And thanks to our good friend Carly Terrett, a surgical nurse who has been visiting to help train the team on new equipment and finish preparations in the new building.

This surgical center is truly a team effort, and represents new hope for the people of the Southern Peninsula to be able to get the care they need, when they need it. To support all of the work at SBH, click here to make a donation.
